I don't know what disgusts me more...

Journal Entry: Sat Mar 7, 2009, 3:55 AM
...this girls Father, the Archbishop or the Catholic Church.

I found this story on Plime.com - [link] - this whole ordeal sickens me.

Full Story from the BBC News website - [link]

By Gary Duffy - BBC News, Sao Paulo

A Brazilian archbishop says all those who helped a child rape victim secure an abortion are to be excommunicated from the Catholic Church. The girl, aged nine, who lives in the north-eastern state of Pernambuco, became pregnant with twins. It is alleged that she had been sexually assaulted over a number of years by her stepfather. The excommunication applies to the child's mother and the doctors involved in the procedure. The pregnancy was terminated on Wednesday.

Abortion is only permitted in Brazil in cases of rape and where the mother's life is at risk and doctors say the girl's case met both these conditions. Police believe that the girl at the centre of the case had been sexually abused by her step-father since she was six years old. The fact that she was pregnant with twins was only discovered after she was taken to hospital in Pernambuco complaining of stomach pains.

Her stepfather was arrested last week, allegedly as he tried to escape to another region of the country. He is also suspected of abusing the girl's physically handicapped older sister who is now 14.

Intervention bid

The Catholic Church tried to intervene to prevent the abortion going ahead but the procedure was carried out on Wednesday. Now a Church spokesman says all those involved, including the child's mother and the doctors, are to be excommunicated.

The Archbishop of Olinda and Recife, Jose Cardoso Sobrinho, told Brazil's TV Globo that the law of God was above any human law. He said the excommunication would not apply to the child because of her age, but would affect all those who ensured the abortion was carried out. However, doctors at the hospital said they had to take account of the welfare of the girl, and that she was so small that her uterus did not have the ability to contain one child let alone two.

While the action of the Church in opposing an abortion for a young rape victim is not unprecedented, it has attracted criticism from women's rights groups in Brazil.

So if they would have followed what they call 'The Law of God' not only would the twins not survive, but the nine year old, an innocent CHILD, would die as well. This would also mean that the father would only need to confess to his sins, pay his penance and all would be forgiven. Yet those who saved this girls life are to be thrown out of the church.

If these are the type of people I would spend an eternity with in heaven, I would rather suffer an eternity of pain and torment in hell than spend one minute in heaven with such company.

The catholic church is so backwards and wanting to live in the dark ages that it is scary...

I was raised RC, but am totally agnostic these days... that institution needs a major major overhaul.

I wonder if they excommunicated the step father, or if they forgave him his sins.

I completely agree with you.

Twins at nine? Wow. This whole story is just ridiculous from beginning to end. "The law of God was above any human law". And yet they feel self entitled enough to impose such law. Funny how that always works.
:iconkrash:
There is no mention of him at all, but since he had nothing to do with the abortion, I am sure they will treat him like any other child molester....they will do nothing.

I was discussing this yesterday with someone else. It is disgusting, but not the first case of the sort in Latin America: that girl was damn lucky that at least she had the option to abort and that the abortion was carried out. Let me copy what I wrote there.

"And while in most of those countries there are provisions for abortion in cases where health, minors or mentally handicapped people are involved, in a lot of cases this is just a patina for the civil law to say they did their bit, while courts and hospitals play pass the bucket paying lip service to the letter of the law and in reality delaying things to the point where the abortion is not possible or the legal limits have passed. There was a case in Argentina in the early 90s that involved a girl with severe autism and low IQ who got gangraped at age 12-13 while going to a special school. One of the rumoured suspects was related to the local chief of police, and you can guess how the investigation went. The mother of the girl found out about the pregnancy quickly enough, her doctor requested permission from the judge to perform the abortion. Judge said there was no reason to pass a sentence as the case was contemplated in the Penal Code (minor, mentally deficient that was raped) and dismissed the case. Public hospital refused to give permission or facilities for it without a court order, and since the family was poor, she couldn't go to a private consultant. And as the pregnancy was registered, if she had a backstreet abortion there would be an investigation. Result? After long enough of going from one place to another, she had to keep the pregnancy as the period for a safe termination was past. She drop out of school (they wouldn't allow her in the special school citing "lack of facilities for her condition") and she became violent and lost all the improvements that she'd had as a result of the specialised teaching she'd had. The church celebrated that there had been no abortion. I wanted to stab every single one of them with a curette."

I'd like to think there is a god, and he loves the fruits of our labors more than the religious nuts.

Don't get me started on Catholicism, I think it's a load of crap with all the clearly made up stuff they've tacked onto the basic Christianity.

I don't understand it, if every life is sacred, how could you support an option that leads to death for everyone but the abuser? I'd like to have some truth serum and a live webcam feed and question high-ranking church members.
